Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Osafune Kiyomitsu with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate

【Description】

Summary

This blade was signed by Bizen Koku Jyu Osafune Kiyomitsu (備前国住長船清光) in the 10th year of the Eiroku era (1567: The end of the Muromachi period). The maker’s name, Kiyomitsu, lasted a few generations. Based on his active period, we believe it was forged by the second-gen Kiyomitsu, the son of Goro Zaemon Kiyomitsu. Bizenkoku Jyu means that he resided in Bizen province (today’s Okayama prefecture) when he created the blade. It was common for many swordsmiths to inscribe where they lived before their signatures.

The second-gen Kiyomitsu was active in sword-forging during the Eiroku era (1558-1570: Late Muromachi period). The second-gen Kiyomitsu is one of the most famous ones among other generations. Kiyomitsu belonged to Bizen Osafune school.

Those who forged swords in the Bizen province(Okayama prefecture) at the end of the Muromachi Period(1492-1569 A.D) are called Matsu Bizen(Matsu means the end). Kiyomitsu was one of the most famous figures, and this hereditary name was passed down through generations in Bizen Osafune school.

The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period because it was in the middle of the Sengoku period (Warring state period). The demand for weapons increased among strong feudal lords. It would be nice to have a piece forged in the warring state period when there was so much rivalry between warlords. It is possible that this blade was ordered by a high-class Samurai.

This History of Bizen Osafune School

It is said that Osafune school was founded by Mitsutada (光忠), who was active during the mid-Kamakura period. Bizen Osafune school was the biggest one of all other schools in Bizen province, and they received many orders from feudal lords or renowned Samurai. They were called Osafunemono and were beloved by Samurai warriors.

Among the swordsmiths who belonged to this school, Nagamitsu, Sanenaga, and Kagemitsu are known as Osafune Sansaku, the three renowned Osafune swordsmiths. There are also four other prominent swordsmiths who were from Bizen Osafune school. They are called Osafune Shiten-no, the four masters of Osafune school. Their names are Nagamitsu, Kanemitsu, Nagayoshi, and Motoshige.

BIZEN is located near the Chugoku Mountains, where iron sands, one of the essential materials for making Japanese swords, were abundant. Furthermore, BIZEN swordsmiths had close access to the Yoshi River, where they could find water and charcoal. This geological location contributed to the swordsmiths forging high-quality refined blades. We presume BIZEN was quite active in sword-forging from ancient times. It is said that BIZEN DEN was created by groups of swordsmiths there during the late Heian era (Late 12th century ). These ancient swordsmiths in Bizen province are called Ko-Bizen (Old Bizen) swordsmiths. By inheriting the sword forging techniques from Ko-Bizen swordsmiths, the Bizen Osafune school flourished from the mid-Kamakura period.

【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)  67.0 cm ( 26.3 inches)
Curvature(Sori) 1.1 cm (0.43 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

HabakiHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Authentication PaperNTHK-NPO Kanteisho Certificate for the blade

NTHK, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on March 7th in the 57th year of Showa (1982). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.

Registration Number : Tokyo 225828

The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(銃刀剣類登録証). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.
