Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Nobutsura with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate
【Description】
This blade was signed by Iwai Kanji Nobutsura(岩井歓司信連) in the second year of Bunkyu(1862). He was active in sword-forging in Settsu province(today’s Osaka) at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu era: 1862-1868). He was an apprentice of Kurihara Nobuhide(栗原信秀), who had served Minamoto Kiyomaro. There aren’t many remaining works signed by Nobutsura partly because we assume he dedicated his career to helping his master(Nobuhide). His craftsmanship has been highly regarded among Japanese sword collectors.
What is Bakumatsu era?
Japan enjoyed a relatively peaceful time from the early Edo period to the mid-Edo period(the 1600s-1760s) because of the stable economy and the powerful government run by Tokugawa Shogunate. Samurai didn’t have many opportunities to utilize his Katana sword in public or on battlefields during this time. Thus, they carried their swords more as a symbol of their social status. The demand for blades decreased accordingly compared to the previous Warring state period called Sengoku Jidai(1467-1600).
However, toward the end of the Edo period(1764-1876), the Japanese sword’s role changed dramatically. With the poverty spreading and political turmoil in Japan, there were so many riots initiated by the civilians. Japanese swords started to play an essential role in maintaining public safety. Pressure from foreign countries to open Japanese borders also forced Samurai to order strong-looking blades to survive this tumultuous time. We believe many swordsmiths made great efforts to forged high-quality, practical swords for their masters to prepare for battles. Nobutsura must have been one of them.
There was a civil war between Tokugawa’s military government and the new Meiji government at the end of the Edo period. That means the original owner of this Katana might have seen the moment when Samurai’s life changed forever. This blade has a strong looking and must have been practical to use in that demanding time.
This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.
【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa):76.0 cm( 29.9 inches)
Curvature(Sori): 0.9 cm( 0.35 inches)
Hamon:
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada):
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process
Nakago:Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.
Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.
Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).
Fuchi-Kashira:A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.
The dragon is designed on this Fuchi Kashira. Clouds surround the dragon’s body. Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (蛟, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.
Also, in Japan, there is a belief that worships dragon is a water god. Since rice cultivation flourished in this country, water is always an essential resource. Therefore, the dragon motif has been familiar to Japanese people since a long time ago. A theory says that gods, spirits, and dragons dwell in the clouds. Clouds bring blessed rain, and their movements significantly affect the weather of the day. So, there is a deep connection between the dragon and clouds. It might be one of the reasons why the combination of these motifs is often seen in sword mountings.
Tsuka and Menuki:Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.
Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Menuki’s motif is also the dragon. It is in good condition and remains its glossy black color. If you focus on the lower side dragon’s hand, you will find that it brings a small ball. A theory says that this ball is the Nyoi Houju (如意宝珠, Cintāmaṇi). It is a fantasy jewel that fulfills any desire, gives out treasure, clothes, food, and drink. Moreover, it heals illness and suffering, removes evils, purifies muddy water, and prevents disasters. It is said this magical item is taken from the brain of the king of the dragon. By using the same beast motif for the Fuchi Kashira and the Menuki, the entire look of this Koshirae.
Tsuba and Habaki:Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.
This antique Tsuba is made from iron. There are small damages and rust due to aging. Please enjoy them as a part of an antique texture. This Tsuba’s edge is framed with a soft metal plate. It gives the gorgeousness for the work. This frame has practicality, such as preventing the wear of the edge part. Also, it prevents the wear and tear of the Kimono if the edge damages it by touching the cloth.
You would find heat mark-shaped holes at four corners. It is called the Inome (猪の目) pattern. As its name implies, the boar’s eyes are the origin of this design. Some people believed that the Inome pattern would work as an amulet to protect them from evil spirits or fire. Also, it is said it would bring good luck. This pattern is often found in traditional Japanese architectures such as shrines or temples and used Gegyo (懸魚, decoration under the roof, where the roof is jointed) or metal fittings for hiding timber joints.
Saya: Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
