Description
This item is an antique Kayakuire (火薬入れ, powder flask). It is a small container to store gunpowder. In Japan, powder flasks were made from developed materials and produced with advanced techniques. As you see in this item, some of them were gorgeously painted with lacquer. We estimate this powder flask was made in the Edo period or later.
You could find the crests are depicted with golden paint. This mark is called the Maru ni Ju-no-Ji Mon (丸に十の字紋). One of the famous Samurai families, the Shimazu (島津) clan, used this design for their family crest. There are several theories about this pattern. According to a view, it comes from the action of making the sign of the cross. Another approach says it depicts the figures of two dragons intertwined in a cross, rising towards the sky. It was once believed this design would exorcize misfortune and bring happiness. There is no proof of its origin, but we could guess that the Maru ni Ju-no-Ji Mon was treated as an auspicious pattern.
