Description
This item is an Inro (印籠). We think this Inro is decorated with the Guri-Bori (倶利彫) technique. The Guri-Bori is a technique in which dozens of metals of different colors (such as copper or Shakudou) are layered alternately, and the Karakusa (唐草, arabesque) or the Uzumaki (渦巻, spiral) patterns are carved into the surface. Since the technique of Mokume Gane (木目金) is the technique of further forging the metal that has been dug down using the method of Guri-Bori, it could be said that Guri-Bori is the original technique of Mokume Gane.

The Ojime (緒締, part between the Inro case and the Netsuke) is a component that prevents the Inro case from opening, and it also has another role in combining two strings into one. The Ojime of this Inro seems to be made from a kind of stone. The motif of Netsuke (根付, miniature sculpture, fastener) has the same design as the Inro. We could find that the Kiku (菊, chrysanthemum) and the Kiri (桐, paulownia) patterns are placed here and there. Both plant designs are popular as motifs of family crests. This Inro’s former owner might have ordered to put such plant patterns due to his family status or lineage.

We hope you enjoyed this description and wish this Inro would speak to you.
