Title: Kiku ni Chou

Description
This item is the Kouro (香炉, incense burner). It is a tool used for heating solid fragrances and releasing aroma components. We think this Kouro expresses the figure of a butterfly resting its wings on a chrysanthemum flower. The butterfly’s eyes, leg joints, and even the pattern on its wings are sculpted, and it is the principal motif of this work. If you look at the flower part from directly above, you could see that the petals are evenly spaced. Below that, chrysanthemum leaves are arranged rhythmically to form the base of this Kouro. This work is made up of gorgeous-looking motifs. However, we would like to note that each has a meaning as a lucky charm.

A larva becomes a chrysalis, and it grows up into a butterfly. Since this insect changes its looks, it symbolizes the reborn. It is understandable that Samurai warriors, who were always on the verge of life and death, favored the butterfly pattern. Also, as butterflies make a couple on good terms, this motif represents a happy marriage.

The chrysanthemum is also an auspicious motif. A long time ago, chrysanthemums were used as a medicine for obtaining a long life in the continent, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). The chrysanthemum symbolizes fall, and people have greatly appreciated it since ancient times. As seen on this Kouro, chrysanthemum petals form radially. Therefore, chrysanthemums have been likened to the sun. This flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.
