Antique Japanese Sword Tanto Signed by KANESADA with NTHK Certificate

【Description】
We believe this blade was forged by Noushu Shiimzu Jyu Izuminokami KANESADA(濃州清水住和泉守兼定) based on the signature and the period(Tensho Period) written in the NTHK Kanteisho. This swordsmith was a son of third generation Izuminokami Kanesada. The first generation Izuminokami Kanesada is one of the most famous swordsmiths in Samurai history. The style of his swords resembles his prior generations. He forged swords in Mino province first and then moved to Oushu(Tohoku region, northern part of Japan) to serve Ashina Clan. During the Sengoku period(warring state period), Ashina clan was as strong as Date Clan, one of the most successful warlords back then. Kami was a kind of special title for Japanese swordsmiths given by the emperor. One needed to be really skillful at sword forging to receive this title.

Generally, the swordsmiths from MINO (Gifu Pref.)used 兼(KANE) in the first part of his name as his signature. For example, it would be Kane-aki, Kane-tane and so forth. The most famous Kanesada was Izuminokami kanesada. However, there were other talented Kanesada as well. This sword was forged by Koudai Kanesada, who forged swords during the Tensho period.
The style of the MINO swordsmiths, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI in a classic straight line and random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It had flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868). In SHINTOU ERA(1574-1764), many MINO-DEN swordsmiths had moved to any country, such as ECHIGO province.

Curvature(Sori)0.1cm(0.04 inches)

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt

It has a signature of Tunemichi, who was a sword fitting maker in the Edo period. We think that it describes a Japanese folklore where Oni(Japanese demon) disguised in woman and made an innocent man drink, trying to eat him at the end. It is quite common to engrave a short story like this.

Tsuka&MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration

Tassel decoration is on one side and mice decoration is on the other. Mice represents prosperity for descendants.

Tsuba& HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

There is a high-ranked samurai engraved on this Tsuba. Gold and silver inlay technique was applied.

Scabbard(Saya)Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword

It has Cherry blossom design and Makie(traditional lacquer technique) was used to make this case. There is a small knife store in the side of the case. It is called Kozuka, which could be Chinese folklore.
