Description
This item is a Japanese pottery bottle. It has a milky white color base, and red and green paints are used for its decoration. There are small cracks and holes in the base here and there. Each pattern is drawn without hesitation using a brush, and we could feel the force of the brush from the way the lines run. While we are unsure what the motifs drawn with the vermilion lines are, depending on how you look at them, it could be seen as an abstract version of a shrimp. In the Samurai’s society, as a shrimp is covered with a hard shell, people thought that a shrimp represented the figure of a brave Samurai who wore armor. It shows the wishes that the fate of a Samurai will last for a long time. A shrimp has been likened to the figure of an older adult because of its long feelers. Also, shrimps actively jump even though they are bowed. That is the reason why the shrimp pattern is treated as a symbol of perpetual youth and longevity. This animal sheds its molt several times to grow up; therefore, some people consider it to be a symbol of success in life.
