Title: Tsuru Kame Zu

Description
This item is a type of brazier. As you know, a brazier is a tool used for heating or simple cooking by burning charcoal on the ash. In Japan, there are several types of braziers categorized based on size. For example, Daimyo Hibachi (大名火鉢) is a large brazier, and the Teaburi (手あぶり) is a small size one. The brazier was once used by higher-class Samurai families and court nobles. And it became popular among the general public from the Edo period to the Meiji period. Eventually, gorgeous braziers decorated with metal engraving or brilliant coloring were produced. We guess this brazier was also made in such a trend by seeing its decorativeness.

About the design, this brazier is decorated with multiple auspicious motifs. You would find birds on the top and turtles on the side. The Tsuru (鶴, crane) and the Kame (亀, turtle) are the classic combination that represents longevity. Their lively figures are beautifully depicted in this work. If you focus on plants, you will find that three plants are designed: pine tree, bamboo, and Japanese apricot. Same as the crane and turtle design, it is also a popular combination. The Shou-Chiku-Bai (松竹梅) is the combination of these three plants. There are several theories its meaning as follows; longevity, power of perseverance, vitality, etcetera. We could imagine these good omen motifs were favored by then people. Each motif was well-balanced arranged in this small brazier. We hope this elegant work will be a part of your great collection. Also, it is a good idea to present it as a gift.
