The Suzuri Bako is often made from lacquered wood. The *Makie (蒔絵) and the *Raden (螺鈿) are popular ornamental techniques for this kind of item. Artisans developed various skills to decorate boxes.
The Suzuri (硯, inkstone), Bunchin (文鎮, paperweight), Fude (筆, brush), and a small knife are stored in this Suzuri Bako. When we write this flower’s name in Japanese, its second letter means mountain hermit medicine that would give us eternal youth. Based on the meaning of this letter, the peony pattern symbolizes eternal youth and longevity.
Regarding the design of the inside of this lid, a pair of Minogame (蓑亀) is depicted. The name Mino (蓑) means a straw raincoat and Kame (亀) means a turtle. In real life, turtles called Minogame usually grow the seaweed and algae on their shell. The Minogame depicted on this lid have tails or algae resembling a farmer’s straw coat. According to a theory, this kind of Minogame’s design was brought to Japan from the Continent in the Heian period. Then, it is regarded as a auspicious creature and believed as a symbol of longevity and wisdom in Japan.
You would also find the butterfly motif tool, which might be a paperweight, by the inkstone. People preferred the butterfly pattern due to its growth process, beauty, and auspiciousness among the various animal patterns. A larva becomes a chrysalis, and it grows up into a butterfly. Since this insect changes its looks, it symbolizes being reborn; therefore, Samurai loved this design. In this way, butterflies are seen as symbols of human life, death, and resurrection and are said to house the souls of the dead.

*Makie……A typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1,200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works.
*Raden…… It is a kind of decorative technique that is often used for traditional craftworks. It uses the pearl part of seashells and puts it into the engraved surface of lacquer or wood. Thanks to its iridescent luster, it gives a luxurious look to works.
