Description
The theme of this Inro case is the thunder god (雷神, Raijin). Known as Takeminakata (タケミナカタ), he has been worshipped since ancient times as both the deity of thunder and the protector of nature. He is typically characterized by a fearsome face and a large body, often depicted with unique drums.
On the front of this Inro case, you can see the thunder god’s fearsome face, while the back features several drums shooting straight out from his wide-open mouth. Behind each drum, there are swirling arabesque patterns (唐草模様, Karakusa moyou) that follow them. These patterns, resembling climbing plants, symbolize vitality due to their constant growth. The combination with the thunder god creates a design that expresses strength and power.
The Ojime (緒締, part between the Inro case and the Netsuke) is a component that prevents the Inro case from opening, and it also has another role in combining two strings into one. The Ojime of this Inro seems to be made from a kind of stone.
We hope you enjoyed this description and wish this Inro would speak to you.
