Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Kunimasu with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

Kunimasu was a renowned swordsmith from Tosa province. (today’s Kochi prefecture). He was first an apprentice of a great swordsmith, second-generation Osaka Tanbakami Yoshimichi. Later, he was adopted by Uenokami Yoshikuni, whose brother was Yoshiyuki. It is said that a famous Samurai, Ryoma Sakamoto, who played an important role at the end of the Edo period, used a sword forged by Yoshiyuki.
Kunimasu might have had some interactions with Yoshiyuki back in the day.

Kunimasu was an Okakae Kaji for the Yamauchi clan in Tosa province, meaning he exclusively forged swords for them. Yamauchi clan ruled the Tosa domain during the Edo period(1603-1868) after Ieyasu Tokugawa had granted them the land.
Yamauchi clan was one of the most powerful samurai family in Shikoku island (one of five islands in Japan).
