Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Kunimasa with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Oshu Uda-gun Nakamura Ju Kunimasa (奥州宇多郡中村住国正) during the Genroku era (1688-1704: Mid Edo period), according to NBTHK’s appraisal. Oshu (奥州) is another name for Mutsu province, which refers to the region that is today’s Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, and Aomori prefectures and part of Akita prefecture. And Uda-gun Nakamura was a castle town that existed in the northern part of Fukushima prefecture. He resided in this area when he forged this blade.

Kunimasa became an Okakaekaji of the Soma clan in this area, which flourished from the late Sengoku period (Warring State period) to the Edo period. Okakaekaji is a swordsmith who exclusively forged blades for a specific clan or domain.

Also, during the Genroku era, there was another swordsmith named Kunimasa, who is known as Omi no Kami Minamoto Kunimasa (近江守源国正) and also signed Oshu Uda-gun Nakamura Ju Kunimasa, in this region. Omi no Mamoru Minamoto Kunimasa, whose real name was Bunemon. He was originally from Nakamura in Oshu province and later moved to Edo to become an apprentice of Yamashiro no Kami Hidetoki (山城守秀辰). Hidetoki belonged to the Tokuin school in Seki in Noshu province (today’s Gifu prefecture), his native region, and he was an apprentice of a renowned swordsmith called Masatsune in Owari province (today’s Aichi prefecture). Omi no Mamoru Minamoto Kunimasa is also known for having forged valuable swords of great sharpness, which were designated as Wazamono.

It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token (特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

*Please keep in mind that there is a scouple of Kitae Kizu and a black rust on the blade. If you like to see the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us.

【Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)73.0 cm (28.7 inches)
Curvature(Sori)1.5 cm (0.59 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

KissakiKissaki is the tip of the Japanese sword.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

KoshiraeKoshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

The theme of this Fuchi Kashira is the Hatou Zu (波涛図), which depicts large undulating and splashing waves. As waves’ movements continue endlessly, the wave pattern represents eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, etcetera. Also, since tides repeatedly change the shape and terrain of rocks, some people hoped for a strong will by using this motif. People used this pattern wishing for an indomitable spirit to rechallenge time and time without giving up. Thanks to its dynamic design, this motif has been appreciated, especially for men’s Kimono (traditional Japanese costume). It is also said that warlords used wave patterns on their banners and armors, comparing the movement of battle to that of waves coming and going.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

We assume the motif of this Menuki might be Kiku (菊, chrysanthemum). And it may be composed of several parts of the flower, such as leaves, petals or buds. A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for obtaining a long life in China, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). Chrysanthemum is one of the flowers which symbolizes fall, and people appreciate it very much since ancient times. As its petals form radially, the chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health. “Kiku no Gomon (菊の御紋)” is a kind of chrysanthemum pattern, and it has been used as the crest of the Emperor and the royal family in Japan so that it is well-known as a noble pattern.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

On this Tsuba, you will see a crescent moon floating among the haze (霞, Kasumi). The sun and the moon have been treated as objects of worship since ancient times. Some people considered them the symbol of authority. The moon pattern has various shapes depending on the waxing and waning of the moon: full moon, half-moon, crescent, or hazy moon. There is also the idea: as the moon changes its shape depending on its fullness, it represents growth and development. Moreover, the moon is a classic design that symbolizes autumn: the combination of a moon with rabbits, deer, autumn grass, waves, etcetera.

Regarding the haze pattern, as this geometric shape looks similar to one of the Japanese Katakana (片仮名) character “エ,” this design is called the Egasumi-Mon (ヱ霞文/エ霞文). We hope you will appreciate these works’ simple but elegant design. Same as the cloud pattern, the haze design has been favored as an auspicious motif. The cloud pattern has been associated with magical power, and people thought it an omen of lucky things. Or, since clouds appear repeatedly, its design represents reincarnation.

SayaSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

This scabbard is covered with black lacquer. Due to its high waterproof effect, lacquer has been used since ancient times in Asia. The blade of a Japanese sword is made of iron, and moisture is the greatest enemy of iron. For the purpose of carrying the blade without degrading it, people devised a method of coating the scabbard with lacquer. To prevent not only moisture but also rain and snow from penetrating the inside of the scabbard, it was necessary to apply multiple layers of lacquer. The Nurushi (塗師, lacquerers) was born precisely because advanced techniques were required to handle the complicated processes.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1005478)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on June 1st in the 28th year of Heisei (2016). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.

Registration Number : Ishikawa 19870

The Board of Education in Ishikawa prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Torokusho (銃砲刀剣類登録証). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.

This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.
