Antique Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Tashiro Kanenobu with Tokubetsu Kicho Certificate

【Description】

This blade is attributed to the work of Tashiro Kanenobu, who was active in sword-forging during the Kanei era(1624-1645: Early Edo period). It is said that Kanenobu was a descendant of Naoe Shizu Kanenobu, one of the most famous swordsmiths in the Nanboku Cho Period(the mid-late14th century) in Mino province. Tashiro Kanenobu also received an honorable title of Yamato no Kami in his career.

The MINO swordsmiths style, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI(Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon )in a classic straight line and random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868).

MINO-DEN exceedingly prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area. Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of their practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province.

The tradition of excellent sword forging skills had been passed throughout the Edo period and Kanenobu is a good example. We are confident you can appreciate great workmanship of Kanenobu.

Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa) 69.8 cm( 27.5 inches)
Curvature(Sori)1.5 cm (0.59 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

This Fuchi Kashira is probably made from copper due to its color. Although the decorative technique was not used for this Fuchi Kashira, its rough surface has a characteristic texture, and it matches well with line carving designs. It seems its texture is easy to fit in hand, which might be why there are some wears on the raised parts. We hope you will enjoy these antique textures.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

The Tonbo (蜻蛉, dragonfly) is the motif of this Menuki. Probably, the gold paint was applied to the entire of it. This insect has been inhabiting since a long time ago in Japan. As they bag preys quickly, its heroic figure was sometimes the object of belief. During the Warring States period, the dragonfly was called the Kachimushi (勝ち虫, winning insect) because of its fearless character; it moves only forward, not backward. Above all, people have favored the combination of the dragonfly pattern with the iris flower or the arrow. Allow was one of the Samurai’s primary weapons. Iris flower is called “Shoubu (菖蒲)” in Japanese, and there is the word “Shoubu (勝負),” which means battle. So, “Shoubu” (菖蒲, iris flower) and “Shoubu” (勝負, fight) those two wards have the same pronunciation. Therefore, these motifs have reminded Samurais of battles.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

A dragon is designed for this Tsuba. The dragon twists its elongated body, and it seems it goes up to heaven. There are many works of sword mountings that are decorated with dragon designs. It shows how this sacred beast motif was favored among Samurais. Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (蛟, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
