Description
The Kani (蟹, crab) is the motif of this figurine. While using the material’s color, red and white coloring are used to create a relatively realistic appearance of the crab.
Crabs have been considered auspicious animals since ancient times. There are various theories, but it is believed that this is due to their unique appearance and habits. The crab’s most distinctive feature is its scissors, and it has been said that the way it moves its scissors up and down brings good luck, and the way it blows bubbles is said to obtain money. After a crab hatches from an egg, it repeatedly molts its skin and grows larger. Our ancestors, who saw this kind of ecology, sensed spirituality in crabs and considered them to be special animals.
In addition, as crabs walk sideways, they were compared “Oukou Kunshi (横行君子),” which means to stick to one’s intention against authority. Samurai warriors might have felt the strong will that they would not bow before power from this motif.
