Description

This sword stand is a beautifully refined piece, finished in deep black lacquer and adorned with intricate raden (螺鈿) inlay—a traditional Japanese decorative technique. Raden involves embedding thin layers of iridescent mother-of-pearl, shaved from the inside of seashells, into the surface. The result is a shimmering design that changes expression depending on the angle of light, showcasing the precision and artistry of skilled craftsmanship.

The central motif features pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms—known collectively in Japanese culture as “Sho-Chiku-Bai” (松竹梅), a symbol of good fortune and resilience. Pine represents longevity, bamboo stands for strength and flexibility, and plum blossoms symbolize grace under adversity, as they bloom even in the cold of winter. Together, they express the virtue of enduring challenges with dignity and perseverance—an auspicious theme cherished in Japanese decorative arts.

Geometric patterns elegantly frame the panel and base, enhancing the sense of sophistication and harmony. Decorative elements are also applied to the reverse side, making the piece visually pleasing from both directions.

In addition to its functional purpose as a stable sword display stand, this piece brings a refined aesthetic and cultural richness to any space, embodying the spirit of traditional Japanese beauty.
