Description
This antique wooden sword stand is suitable for exhibiting Japanese swords. As seen in example photos, you could also display a Daisho (Katana & Wakizashi) set. You could display up to three swords. We hope you will enjoy this item as a sword stand and also as an interior decoration in your room.

About the design, this sword stand has a refined look. This sword stand is entirely painted with lacquer, and each motif is elegantly expressed using the gold Makie (蒔絵) technique. In addition, another traditional Japanese craft method, the Raden (螺鈿). The Makie is a typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1,200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works, as seen on this sword stand. The Raden is a decorative technique that is often used for traditional craftwork. It uses the pearl part of seashells and puts it into the engraved surface of lacquer or wood. Thanks to its iridescent luster, it gives a luxurious look to works, the same as the Makie.

The theme of this sword stand’s design is the Takaradukushi (宝尽くし) theme. It is a combination of treasures. For example, the Kakure-Mino (隠れ蓑, straw raincoat) and the Kakure-Gasa (隠れ笠, hat that hides face) would protect us from danger or illness. The Chouji (丁子, precious medicine, fragrance, dye) is a plant, and it represents happy marriage, good health, and longevity. The Uchide-no-Koduchi (打ち出の小槌, mallet of good luck) would fulfill one’s wish, or defeat one’s enemy. It is well-known that the Daikokuten (大黒天, god of wealth), who is a member of the Shichifukujin (七福神, the Seven Gods of Good Fortune), brings this mallet. The Makimono (巻物, scroll) is a book that gives us much information; therefore, this motif symbolizes knowledge and wisdom. The Gunbai (軍配, Sumo referee’s fan today) would settle the battle. The Fundou (分銅, weight) is the symbol of wealth. The Kinnou (金嚢) is a bag to store treasures. A theory says it has been regarded as a money charm. The Takaradukushi Zu is a design that combines these various types of treasures, and a Houju (宝珠, jewel) is included in this theme. This sword stand is a masterpiece that expresses the beauty of classical Japanese design using traditional techniques.
