Description
This antique wooden sword stand is suitable for exhibiting Japanese swords. You could also display a Daisho (Katana & Wakizashi) set, as seen in an example picture. You could display up to three swords. We hope you will enjoy this item as a sword stand and also as an interior decoration in your room.

About the design, this sword stand has a refined look. This sword stand is entirely painted with lacquer, and each motif is elegantly expressed using the gold Makie (蒔絵) technique. The Makie is a typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1,200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works, as seen on this sword stand.

The motifs depicted on this Katanabako are two types of auspicious plants: Matsu (松, pine tree) and Ume (梅, Japanese apricot blossom). We assume these motifs were designed as elements of a Japanese classical theme called the Shouchikubai (松竹梅). It combines pine trees, bamboo, and Japanese apricot blossoms. Several theories about its meaning are as follows: longevity, power of perseverance, vitality, etcetera. Even today, it is widely cherished as a lucky charm in Japan.

If the object is just for storing objects, a simple plain box could serve items as a storage case. However, the fact that such a luxurious and beautiful box was prepared means that the person who used this box in the past found his Japanese sword stored in this box to be of more value as a practical item. We estimate he was also trying to increase its authority. We hope you would keep your Japanese sword in this box that you met here across the country and treasure it together with the sword.

*As this item is an antique, please check each photo and ensure its condition.

*Please note that this is an example to show how fit this box to store a Tanto sword. The Tanto in the picture in NOT INCLUDED in this item.
