Description

This wooden sword stand is suitable for exhibiting a Katana sword. As seen in the example pictures, you could also display a Daisho (Katana & Wakizashi) set. This sword stand has a refined look. This sword stand is entirely painted with lacquer, and each motif is elegantly expressed with a traditional Japanese craft method, Makie (蒔絵) technique. The Makie is a typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1,200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works.

Regarding the design of this sword stand, each side has a similar but different look. We believe that there is no problem in using either side facing forward based on your taste. The principal motif of this design is Koi (鯉, domestic carp). Based on an ancient foreign story, many fish tried to climb the waterfall called the Ryumon (竜門, dragon gate) in the rapid stream of the Yellow River. As a result, only Koi climbed up and became a dragon and ran through the sky. This is the reason why “Koi-no Taki Nobori” (鯉の滝昇り, domestic carp climbing waterfall) became a symbol of success in life. The Ryumon legend is associated with this story. By living confidently and making efforts, people hoped for their children to grow up to become magnificent people. Samurai families then might have used this fish motif wishing their sons to be promoted to high-ranked Samurai.

Also, a traditional geometric pattern called the Sayagata (紗綾形) is designed on this sword stand. The Sayagata (紗綾形) pattern is a design pattern of  Manji (万字). Sayagata is one of the auspicious designs meaning “longevity and prosperity” because the pattern representing a large number such as 万, which means ten thousand, connected to each other is said to bring good luck. According to a theory, this motif was brought from a foreign country to Japan in the Momoyama period (1568-1600). In the Edo period, it was commonly used on figured satin and combined with designs that featured Japanese apricot blossoms, chrysanthemums, bamboos, or orchids.

You could choose your favorite side as the front, depending on the Japanese sword you display.

*As this product is an antique, there are small scratches and dents on the wood, and golden paintings applied to the carp are partly cracked off. Please check each photo and ensure its condition.
