Description
It has a flat rectangular shape and is divided into six layers. A string was passed to both sides of each step, fastened with netting to prevent falls. Furthermore, the string was sandwiched between bands.

The *Makie (蒔絵) and the Raden (螺鈿) techniques make this Inro case looks gorgeous. The sea surface is depicted, and waves are washing against the large rock. Flowers are floating in the waves; these are probably cherry blossoms. And these petals are expressed with the Raden technique. The sparkle of seashells makes them brilliant. At the backside of this Inro, you would see old Japanese letters. We guess it might be a poem that writes about the sea. We would recommend this elegant Inro as an interior decoration in your room. Or, it would also be a delightful gift.

The Ojime (緒締, part between the Inro case and the Netsuke) is a component that prevents the Inro case will open, and it also has another role in combining two strings into one. The motif of this work’s Ojime has a charming design; it is a man or a child. He squeezes the strings; it seems as he is clinging to the rope. The Netsuke (根付, miniature sculpture, fastener) is also designed with people’s figures. If you focus on the Netsuke, you will find man and woman. This scene might have been quoted from any story.

*Makie……A typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works.

*Raden…… It is a kind of decorative technique that is often used for traditional craftworks. It uses the pearl part of seashells and put it into the engraved surface of lacquer or wood. Thanks to its iridescent luster, it gives a luxurious look to works.
