Description
It has a flat rectangular shape and is made of wood to be divided into five stages. A string was passed to both sides of each step, fastened with netting to prevent fall. Furthermore, the string was sandwiched between bands.

The bird taking rest on the cherry blossom tree’s branch is Kiji (雉, pheasant), Japan’s national bird. This bird has a fertility rate, so that it has been treated as a symbol of prosperity of offspring. It has beautiful feathers and has been appreciated as a magnificent motif since ancient times.

Cherry blossom is also an auspicious design. Cherry blossom is one of the seasonal things of spring, and it has been loved for a long time. Its pattern is designed not only for sword mountings but also for Kimono (traditional Japanese costume) or furnishings. It has believed the god of grain exists in cherry blossom. Therefore, this flower pattern has been treated as a symbol of a plentiful harvest. People held a traditional event under cherry blossom trees to pray for a bumper year in ancient times. It is the origin of the cherry-blossom viewing picnic today.
