Description

Wooden Sword Stand with Nami ni Chidori Motif

This elegant wooden sword stand is designed for displaying a Katana or a Daishō set (Katana and Wakizashi). It features a glossy woodgrain-style finish, highlighted by refined gold-colored detailing delicately etched onto the surface.

The central motif is Nami ni Chidori (波に千鳥, Plovers over Waves), a traditional Japanese design deeply rooted in classical aesthetics. Frequently depicted in paintings, poetry, and decorative arts, this motif symbolizes harmonious relationships and domestic safety, as plovers are often shown flying together over enduring waves. Through wordplay, chidori (千鳥) can also be read as “sen-tori” (千取り), meaning “to seize a thousand,” and thus the motif is also associated with victory, success, and the achievement of goals. For this reason, it has long been favored as an auspicious design in kimono, Noh costumes, textiles, lacquerware, and ceramics.

On the front panel, pine trees (松, matsu) are placed symmetrically on both sides of the design. Pine is a symbol of longevity and steadfastness, often paired with other auspicious plants.
The reverse side features bamboo (竹, take) rendered in raden (螺鈿, mother-of-pearl inlay). Raden is a traditional decorative technique that inlays thin pieces of shell into lacquered surfaces, creating a subtle iridescent effect. Bamboo represents resilience and growth, and together with pine forms part of the classic auspicious pairing known as shōchikubai (松竹梅, pine, bamboo, and plum).

Decorating the upper center of the front panel and the legs of the stand is the Katabami-mon (片喰紋, Wood Sorrel crest). The katabami plant spreads vigorously and is difficult to eradicate, which led to its association with prosperity, resilience, and the continuation of family lineage. As a result, the Katabami crest has been widely used as a family emblem since medieval times.

This piece not only serves as a stable base for your sword but also adds a refined, symbolic presence to any collection.
