Modern Japanese Sword Gendaito Tanto Signed by Akitada with NBTHK Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Sanjo Jyu Akitada (三條住昭忠) in the 15th year of the Showa era (1940). Sanjo is the place located in Niigata prefecture. Sanjo Jyu means he resided in this area when he forged this blade. He was apprentice of Kurihara Hikosaburo and mastered superb sword-forging techniques. He was specially skilled at engraving (彫り物). He often engraved various subjects on his master’s works. We believe this Tanto was originally made as an Omamori Gatana (御守り刀), which was often gifted  to one’s new-born baby because the Japanese sword is also regarded as a sacred symbol and is believed to keep off evil sprits.

About Modern Swordsmith
There are around 150-200 swordsmiths in Japan today. To legally produce Japanese swords, one needs to pass the national exam given by the Agency for Cultural Affairs(Bunka-Cho) and receive the license. Before taking the exam, one must finish his or her apprenticeship under a licensed master for more than five years.
Those who practice Iaido(居合道) tend to use those modern swords, and there are modern Japanese sword collectors nationwide.
The modern Japanese sword makers are researching old ways to forge swords and trying to recreate ancient-style swords. They are the ones who keep the tradition of Japanese history alive.

It is appraised as a  Hozon Token(保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.
