Title: Bronze Vase of Fortune

Description

This Japanese bronze vase combines symbolic decoration with an elegant form. The vessel has a tall flared mouth, a long neck, and a rounded body tapering to a firm foot, a shape intended for artistic display rather than daily use.

Around the neck appear three symbolic animals: a monkey, recalling the folk tale The Monkey-Crab Battle; a horse, long revered as a sacred messenger of the gods and later central in Samurai culture; and a rabbit, linked to fertility, safe childbirth, and also to the moon as a symbol of good fortune. The body is decorated in high relief with a Samurai warrior from the late 16th–early 17th century, wearing armor and carrying bow and arrows, accompanied by his attendant—an image evoking the heroic spirit of the Momoyama to early Edo period. On the reverse side, a crane with a pine tree forms the classic motif Matsu ni Tsuru, an auspicious design symbolizing longevity and prosperity.

Bearing the signature “Kyokuhō” (旭峰) on its base, this vase was most likely created as a decorative art piece, embodying Japanese ideals of protection, vitality, and long life.
