Description
This antique wooden sword stand is ideal for displaying a Japanese sword, especially a Tachi, as shown in the example photos. It can be enjoyed not only as a functional sword stand but also as an elegant interior decoration.
The design features the motif “Peonies with Chinese Lions” (Botan ni Karajishi, 牡丹に唐獅子), originating from the well-known Japanese proverb, “Peonies with Chinese Lions, Bamboo with Tigers” (牡丹に唐獅子、竹に虎), which refers to harmonious and visually striking pairings.
In Japanese culture, the lion (Karajishi, 唐獅子) is considered the king of beasts—strong and invincible—yet it has one weakness: a tiny parasitic insect known as “Shishi-shinchū no mushi” (獅子身中の虫). According to legend, the only cure for this parasite is the dew that forms on peony flowers at night, which is why lions are said to remain close to peonies for protection and survival.
In addition, the sword rest area of the stand features a hōju (宝珠), or sacred jewel. In Japanese tradition, the hōju symbolizes wealth, power, prosperity, and the flourishing fortune of a family. Together, the lion-and-peony motif and the hōju convey themes of strength, the source of its preservation, prosperity, and protection—making this design a deeply symbolic and highly favored choice in traditional Japanese craftsmanship and sword fittings.
