Title: Goshichi-no Kiri Mon Kin Makie Box

Description
This small box is called Natsume (棗) in Japanese. It is one of the tea utensils used for storing Matcha (抹茶, powdered green tea). As its shape looks similar to jujube (Natsume in Japanese), it is said this box is called this name.

The Goshichi-no Kiri (五七の桐) and the chrysanthemum patterns are designed for this box. Both of these motifs are treated as noble motifs in Japan. The Kiri (桐) pattern is composed of three standing straight inflorescences and three leaves. The number of flowers that are blooming at each inflorescence means the ranks of this design. The Goshichi-no Kiri pattern has five-seven five flowers for inflorescences. So that this is a more high-ranked design than Gosan-no Kiri (五三の桐, three-five-three flowers) pattern, this motif is known as the symbolic design of the Japanese government. It is also famous that one of the most popular Samurais in Japan: Toyotomi Hideyoshi used the Kiri pattern for his family crest. This plant pattern was once used by the imperial family and national leaders of the time. However, today, it is often used by ordinary people.

A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for obtaining a long life in China, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). Chrysanthemum is one of the flowers which symbolizes fall, and people appreciate it very much since ancient times. As its petals form radially, the chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.

You could use this box for the use as a tea caddy. Or, you could enjoy it as an accessory box to put your belongings. It also would be a lovely gift.

*Makie……A typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works.
