Description
This item is the set of Natsume (棗) and Chaire (茶入). Both are containers for Matcha (抹茶, powdered green tea). The name of Natsume was given because its shape resembles the fruit of Natsume (棗, the Japanese name of jujube). In the past, black lacquerware Natsumes were common. However, with the changing times, various designs have been produced.
In tea ceremonies, there are two main types of Matcha containers. One is called the Chaire, a tool for advanced users, basically used for storing strong tea. The Chaire is usually pottery. On the other hand, the Natsume is a container for thin tea and is basically made of wood and lacquered. However, as mentioned above, there are pottery Natsume and Natsumes made from bamboo or Japanese paper with lacquer.
This set item includes both Natsume and Chaire. Tea Tool-16 is a Chaire, and others are Natsumes. Each of the designs has a different look, so you could make a collection of tea utensils by obtaining this set item. Tea Tool-16 has a green and yellow glaze that gives it a spring feel and is decorated with the Shippou (七宝) pattern, which is an auspicious pattern. Other Natsumes are decorated with lacquer and traditional Japanese techniques. You could enjoy the beauty of the *Makie (蒔絵) and *Raden (螺鈿) in these small works. Although they might look simple at first glance, some have ingenious designs, such as patterns that appear when you open the lid. Please enjoy the Japanese culture of tea ceremony and the traditional decorative techniques used in tea utensils.
*Makie……A typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1,200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works.
*Raden…… It is a kind of decorative technique that is often used for traditional craftworks. It uses the pearl part of seashells and puts it into the engraved surface of lacquer or wood. Thanks to its iridescent luster, it gives a luxurious look to works.
