Description
This item is a Chaire (茶入). It is a kind of container for Matcha (抹茶, powdered green tea). In tea ceremonies, there are two main types of Matcha containers. One is called the Chaire, a tool for advanced users, basically used for storing strong tea. The Chaire is usually pottery. On the other hand, the Natsume (棗) is a container for thin tea and is basically made of wood and lacquered. However, there are also pottery Natsume and Natsumes made from bamboo or Japanese paper with lacquer.

We estimate this Chaire is categorized as the Akabata Yaki (赤膚焼, Akabata ware). This pottery has been made in the hills of the Mt. Gojō (五条山) area in Nara (奈良) City. It is said that its name originated from Mt. Akabata (赤膚山), another name for Mt. Gojo, or from the red color of the soil that burns. In this way, there are several theories due to the lack of historical materials. The Mt. Gojō area in Nara City initially has a thin layer of soil, and the soil’s color changes depending on where it is collected. Therefore, there is no specific definition for this style of pottery, and the characteristic of Akabata ware is that it has been able to create all kinds of pottery freely without worrying about the color of the clay, glaze, or firing method.

The light gray color of this base is a basic color. However, the color and shape vary depending on the pottery.
