Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Hidehiro with NBTHK Tokubestsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Echizen Daijo Minamoto Kunisada (越前大掾源国定) in the 10th year of the Genroku era (1697: Mid Edo period). Kunisada was the son of Kunishige (国重).

Kunisada belonged to Bitchu Koku Mizuta school, which had been founded by the descendants of Ko AOE Tametsugu(古青江為次) in the late Muromachi period(1530-). Tametsugu is one of the most famous swordsmiths in the late Heian period-early Kamakura period(Late 12C-Early 13C). One of his works is designated as a national treasure of Japan.

AOE(青江) is the name of the school Tametsugu belonged to. It was located in Kurashiki city, Okayama prefecture today. AOE school was prosperous during the Kamakura-Nanbokucho era(-Late 12C-Late 14C), but it almost disappeared in the Muromachi period. However, because of the descendants of Tametsugu, the Ko AOE-style sword became popular again and revitalized the school by changing its name to Bitchu Koku Mizuta school.

The Bitchu Koku Mizuta school flourished from 1530-1700 (The end of the Sengoku period to the mid-Edo period) in today’s Okayama prefecture. There were about 60 swordsmiths who belonged to Mizuta school and Kunishige were the most prestigious smith name only selected sword makers were allowed to use in this school. During the Edo period, many Kunishige swordsmiths moved to other parts of Japan. And it is said that Kunisada was the son of Yamashiro Daijo Kunishige, one of the most prominent figures in this school. Kunisada also forged in Osaka and Hiroshima prefecture. He received an honorable official title of Echizen Daijo for his excellent craftsmanship.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

*Please keep in mind that there is a visible Kitae Kizu on the Shinogiji right above the Habaki area. If you like to see the detailed condition, please check the photo in the list.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

Family crets are designed on this Fuchi Kashira, and these crests are colored with golden paint. We believe this family crest is a type of the Hanabishi (花菱) pattern. In particular, it seems a Maru-ni Ken Hanabashi (丸に剣花菱) pattern. It is a combination of four petals and four swords. This flower-shaped pattern has been loved since ancient times thanks to its elegant appearance. This symbol might have been put here to show the family crest of the Samurai who owned this sword.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

A dragon is the motif of each Menuki. While some colorings have already faded due to aging, there are still traces of golden paints. The figure of a dragon is carefully sculpted in relatively small detail on each small screen, expressing its majestic appearance.

Initially, the dragon was an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is the Mizuchi (蛟, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. There are lots of dragon-designed sword mountings. It shows that many Samurai warriors favored this dignified beast motif.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Flowers are engraved on this Tsuba. We estimate these flowers are the Sakura (桜, cherry blossom). Cherry blossom is one of the seasonal things of spring, and it has been loved for a long time in Japan. Its pattern is designed not only for sword mountings but also for Kimono (着物, traditional Japanese costume) or furnishings. One theory says that the god of grain exists in cherry blossoms. Therefore, this flower pattern has been treated as the symbol of a plentiful harvest. People held a traditional custom under cherry blossom trees to pray for a bumper year in ancient times. It is said this is the origin of the cherry blossom viewing picnic today.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
