Antique Japanese Sword Tachi Signed by Kuniyuki with Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Kuniyuki (国行) during the Muromachi period. NBTHK Hozon certificate doesn’t specify which Kuniyuki forged this blade as there were quite a few swordsmiths who used Kuniyuki as their maker’s name back then. Nevertheless, you can see beautiful piece of Samurai history.

When this blade was forged, Japan was in the warring state called Sengoku Jidai where there were so many rivalry and wars between regional feudal lords. The length of this blade is 68.5 cm long and must have been easy for its owner to handle it back then. It would be nice to have a piece that was forged in the warring state period.

Based on which side the signature is located and the authentication paper, this blade was created as a Tachi sword.  Tachi was mainly used by an armored Samurai with one hand on horseback from the Heian period (794-1185 A.D.) until the early Muromachi period. TACHI was suspended loosely on the left waist with its edge facing the ground so that you could draw it faster to cut down soldiers on the ground. It is stored in a Katana style Koshirae now.

You can see beautiful straight tempering line (Suguha Hamon) on this blade. Suguha Hamon is one of the most traditional tempering line in Japanese sword-forging history. Its curvature is more than 2 cm and that adds an elegant impression to this blade.

This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

This Fuchi Kashira has a simple look. Although there are minor scratches or dents, it is in relatively good condition overall. In other words, this is a part of an antique texture. Instead of ornamental decorations such as gold or silver inlays, you could enjoy the color and texture of the material itself. We hope you will appreciate this work.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

This Menuki’s motif is a combination of plate-shaped object and cherry blossoms. We think the answer to what is different about this plate-like piece depends on the person. We are just basing our interpretation here on our personal opinion. We suppose two possibilities: hedge or sleeve. In this case, a sleeve means a shoulder protector of armor. As Japanese sword and armor are both related to Samurai, this possibility is understandable.

Cherry blossom is one of the seasonal things of spring, and it has been loved for a long time in Japan. Its pattern is designed not only for sword mountings but also for Kimono (着物, traditional Japanese costume) or furnishings. One theory says that the god of grain exists in cherry blossoms. Therefore, this flower pattern has been treated as the symbol of a plentiful harvest.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Oval-shaped Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. It depicts a mountain landscape with a waterfall. And you can see the tiger moving forward while being wary of its surroundings. The scenery of the waterfall flowing behind the tiger creates a regal presence as if it were the ruler of this place. The tiger is a brave animal. We imagine many Samurai favored this dignified animal motif. A theory says people have considered the tiger pattern would protect people from evil spirits. Therefore, its pattern has been treated as a talisman.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 3028134)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Mar. 2nd in the 4th year of Reiwa (2022). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
