Summary
This blade is attributed to Takada Tokiyuki (高田時行) , who was active during the mid Nabokucho period (1368-1375). Tokiyuki belonged to Takada school. Takada school was founded by Takada Tomoyuki, the father of Tokiyuki, in Takada village, Ohita prefecture, during the Nanbokucho period. (1334-1338 A.D). Tomoyuki went to Bizen province(today’s Okayama prefecture) to master the sword-forging techniques of BIZEN and came back to the village and trained his apprentices. That is how Takada school started. Those who forged swords in Takada village before the Edo period are called Taira Takada and Fujiwara Takada during the Edo period. The blades made before the Muromachi period are categorized as Ko-Takada (Old Takada) swords. The blades made by Tokiyuki are considered this Ko-Takada.
Generally speaking, Kyushu island was prosperous in sword-making because of the long trading history with Asian countries. To gain an advantage in trading, many feudal lords on this island fought against each other. Takada school was able to receive many orders as the demand increased among those lords. The material of Japanese swords(high-quality iron sand and charcoal) was abundant in the mount Sobo Katamuki, located near Takada village. We believe Takada school prospered because of its geographic location and natural resources.
What is Tachi？
Based on the characteristic of the blade, NBTHK judged it as a Tachi sword.
The tachi is a type of Japanese sword that developed from the Heian period (794–1185) through the early Muromachi period. It was primarily used by armored samurai in mounted combat. The sword’s pronounced curvature and relatively long blade made it especially well suited for delivering powerful downward cuts from horseback, reflecting the fighting styles of the time.
A tachi was worn suspended from the left side of the waist, with the cutting edge facing downward. This method of mounting allowed for smooth and efficient drawing of the blade, enabling swift transitions from drawing to striking. As a result, the tachi proved highly effective in combat situations where mounted warriors engaged enemies on the ground.
From the Kamakura period through the Nanbokuchō period, the tachi became the principal weapon of the samurai class. Beyond its practical role on the battlefield, it also served as a symbol of authority and status, representing the prestige and martial identity of the warrior elite.
It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token (特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

Hamon：
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)：
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process
Kissaki：Kissaki is the tip of the Japanese sword.
Nakago：Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.
Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.
Koshirae：Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).
Fuchi-Kashira：A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.
The theme of this Fuchi-Kashira is a dragon (龍, Ryu). Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (蛟, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.
In ancient China, the dragon pattern was used for emperors’ clothing so that people strictly defined its shape or even the number of nails. On the other hand, the dragon pattern does not have detailed rules to represent classes in Japan. However, still, it maintains its meaning as the all-purpose auspicious pattern.
Also, in Japan, there is a belief that worships dragon as a water god and is called Ryujin Shinkou (竜神信仰). Since rice cultivation flourished in this country, water is always an essential resource. Therefore, the dragon motif has been familiar to Japanese people since a long time ago.
Tsuka and Menuki：Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.
Tsuba and Habaki：Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.
The theme of this Tsuba is Hachiyō mon family crest (八曜紋) and Tarekaku family crest (垂れ角). The Hachiyō mon is a representative design among star-themed Japanese family crests, made up of star marks (shown as round dots) arranged around a central point. It is often explained as “seven stars surrounding one star,” and a key feature of crests like this is that the stars are expressed as simple circles rather than five-pointed stars. These star crests are not only astronomical motifs. They are also closely linked to religious belief and a talisman-like sense of protection, especially through their connection to Myōken faith, which relates to the North Star and the Big Dipper.
The Tarekaku is a type of “kaku mon,” or square-based crest. It is characterized by a very minimal design: a horizontally stretched rectangle drawn with a thick, bold outline.
Saya：Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
The surface of this Saya is decorated with the Ishime-Ji (石目地). Its base was hit by Tagane (鏨, chisel for metalworking), and it makes a rough surface that seems stone.
Authentication Paper：NBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1024585)
NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 28th in the 7th year of Reiwa (2025). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
Registration Number : Tokyo 328990
The Board of Education in Tokyo issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (銃砲刀剣類登録証). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.
