Antique Japanese Sword Katana Unsigned Masamori with NBTHK Certificate
【Description】
According to NBTHK Kicho Certificate, this blade is attributed to the work of Hosokawa Masamori(細川正守). Masamori was born in 1822(late Edo period) and raised in the Kanuma region(today’s Tochigi prefecture).
His father is Hosokawa Masayoshi, an apprentice of Suishinshi Masahide, one of the most famous swordsmiths at the end of the Edo period. Masamori learned the sword-forging technique in Edo city under master Taikei Naotane who was an apprentice of Suishinshi.
And later on, he went back to his hometown, serving the Matsudaira clan in Tuyama Domain(Tochigi prefecture).
Masamori is one of the most renowned swordsmiths in the late Edo period. He was great at forging Bizen DEN swords, and many of his remaining work has a gorgeous groove on the blade.
This blade has beautiful Suguha Hamon(straight tempering line). It is in excellent condition because it has just been polished. It also comes with gorgeous sword mountings with vivid red-colored scabbard.
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa):71.2 cm( 28.0 inches)
Curvature(Sori): 1.54 cm( 0.6 inches)
Hamon:
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada):
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process
Nakago:Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.
Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.
Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).
Fuchi-Kashira:A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.
Golden dragons are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. Initially, the dragon is a fantasy creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (蛟, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. Today, it still maintains its meaning as the all-purpose auspicious pattern, and people appreciate it.
Tsuka and Menuki:Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.
This Menuki’s motif is also dragons, same as the Fuchi Kashira. Also, their bodies are colored with golden metal.
Tsuba and Habaki:Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.
This antique Tsuba is made from iron and has Kozuka and Kougai holes. A person who seems to be on the journey is depicted. Another person might be his disciple. This theme might have been quoted from a kind of story or folklore.
Saya: Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
