Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Kunishige with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Ichijyoshi Tadakuni(一乗子忠国) in the Inaba domain(Tottori prefecture). Tadakuni was active in sword-forging during 1844-1854(Late Edo period). Tadakuni served Inshu Ikeda Clan as an Okakaekaji. The Ikeda clan was the powerful clan in that Inaba Domain, and Tadakuni exclusively forged swords.

Tadakuni school was initially founded by Shinano Daijyo Tadayuki, a prestigious swordsmith in the early Edo period. And Ichijyoshi Tadakuni was the ninth generation. The first-gen Tadakuni was an apprentice of Dewa Daijyo Kunimichi(出羽大掾国路). Kunimichi master superb craft under Horikawa Kunihiro, one of the most famous swordsmiths in the early Edo period.

The first-gen Tadakuni originally worked in Kyoto area but moved to Inaba domain in Tottori prefecture in 1624 to serve Ikeda clan. He received the title of Shinano Daijyo in 1634. From generation to generation, Tadakuni served the Ikeda clan. There is no doubt that the 9th-gen Tadakuni also mastered the superb sword-forging technique for the Ikeda clan.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

If you like to have a Kozuka that will go well with the black scabbard of this blade, please feel free to contact us.

【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)63.5 cm(  25.0 inches)
Curvature(Sori)1.1 cm(0.43 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

This Fuchi Kashira is in good condition, and each cherry blossom’s carving is quite clear. Each edge of the Fuchi part is framed with rope-shaped golden metal. The color combination of the Tsukamaki thread (the thread that coils the handle) and this Fuchi Kashira gives us an elegant and noble impression.

Cherry blossom is one of the seasonal things of spring, and it has been loved for a long time in Japan. Its pattern is designed not only for sword mountings but also for Kimono (着物, traditional Japanese costume) or furnishings. One theory says that the god of grain exists in cherry blossoms. Therefore, this flower pattern has been treated as the symbol of a plentiful harvest. This plant has been familiar with Japanese people’s life; consequently, we would imagine that many Samurais also enjoyed using the cherry blossom motif for their sword mountings.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

This Menuki’s motif is the Sanko-Duka-Ken (三鈷柄剣). It is a sword that has a characteristic shape handle; its handle has the structure of the San-Kosho (三鈷杵, is a type of item of esoteric Buddhism). The Fudo Myo-O (不動明王) brings this sword. Fudo Myo-O is a protective god in Buddhism, particularly Japanese Shingon Buddhism. This god was also known as a god of wars. The Sanko-Duka-Ken is an esoteric Buddhism tool used for esoteric prayer, meditation, purification, protection from evil spirits, etc. The then-owner of this sword might have worshipped this religion.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Cherry blossom is the common motif of the Fuchi Kashira. It is an antique Tsuba made from iron. Maples and cherry blossoms are designed and inlaid with brass.

According to a theory, this plant motif represents longevity. Maple leaves change their colors from green to yellow, orange, or red. The fall foliage is one of the charms of autumn. Due to this color-changing, this design represents someone who knows how to get along in the world and be happy.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

If you like to purchase a Kozuka that would go well with this Saya, please feel free to contact us.
