Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Fujiwara Kanehiro with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate
【Description】
This blade was signed by Hizenkoku Fujiwara Kanehiro(肥前国藤原兼広), who is also known as Yamato Daijyo Kanehiro (大和大掾兼広). Kanehiro was especially active during the Kanbun era (1661-1673: Early Edo period) in Hizen province (today’s Saga prefecture). Hizen Koku is another name for Hizen province. He was born as the first son of Hizen Kunihiro, another famous swordsmith in the province. Kanehiro was related to the first-gen Tadahiro, one of the most renowned swordsmiths in the early Edo period. He was a grandson of Hizen Hirosada. His birthname was Hashimoto Rokuro Heibei.
He received the title of Yamato Daijo title and he was promoted to Yamato no Kami. The imperial court only gave kami(守) or Daijo (大掾) title to the swordsmiths who did excellent work. It was honorable for any swordsmiths to receive such a title and only highly skilled swordsmiths deserved this title. His son, the second-gen Kanehiro is known as Totomi no Kami Kanehiro. Father and son’s craftsmanship were appreciated by Nabeshima clan who controlled Hizen province during the Edo period.
Hizen Province
Fujiwara Kanehiro and other swordsmiths in the Hizen province worked under the auspices of Nabeshima clan. The swordsmiths in Hizen province were able to produce beautiful Jigane-patterned blades, also known as Hizen To, using and mixing carbon steel made in Netherland.
You can see the beautiful Jigane, which is famous for blades made in Hizen province. The swords forged by Kanehiro are also renowned among Japanese sword collectors because of his exquisite craftsmanship and history.
The first-gen Tadayoshi
The first-gen Tadayoshi was born and raised in the Saga domain. In 1596, under the domain’s order, he went to Kyoto to learn the sword-forging technique from Umetada Myojyu(埋忠明寿), one of the greatest swordsmiths in the early Edo period. He improved his craftsmanship and returned to the Saga domain two years later (1598). The first head of the Nabeshima clan, Nabeshima Katsushige, appreciated the work of the first-gen Tadayoshi very much. Then, Katsushige appointed him as his Okakaekaji, a swordsmith who exclusively forged swords for a specific domain or clan. And Tadayoshi started to stay near Saga castle, which is the headquarter of the Nabeshima clan. And, he founded Hizen Tadayoshi school, which trained more than 100 swordsmiths during the Edo period. Kanehiro belonged to this school.
It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

Hamon：
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)：
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process
Kissaki: Kissaki is the tip of the Japanese sword.
Nakago：Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.
Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.
Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).
Fuchi-Kashira：A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.
At first glance, this Fuchi Kashira looks plain because its surface has worn away due to aging. However, if you look closely you can see a carved figure, probably a dragon. We believe this is the common motif as the Menuki we will focus on below. Initially, dragons were imaginary creatures found in ancient foreign traditions and myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is the Mizuchi (蛟, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers and ears are cows. A dragon was thought to reign at the top of all animals because of its odd appearance. Based on our experiences, there are lots of dragon-designed sword mountings. It shows that many Samurai warriors favored this dignified beast motif.
Tsuka and Menuki：Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.
The same as the Fuchi Kashira mentioned above, you would find a figure of the dragon on each side of this handle. The dragon’s long, slender body twists around like a snake, and you can clearly see its expression. Among dragon-designed Menuki, we often bring a ball-shaped object in their hands based on our experience. This item is the Nyoi Houju (如意宝珠, Cintāmaṇi), a fantasy jewel that fulfills any desire and gives out treasure, clothes, food, and drinks. Moreover, it heals illness and suffering, removes evils, purifies muddy water, and prevents disasters. It is said this magical item is taken from the brain of the dragon king. In this way, dragons are cherished for their auspiciousness.
Tsuba and Habaki：Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.
This antique iron Tsuba has Yotsu-Mokkou (四ツ木瓜) shape. Its Mimi (耳, edge) is framed with a shiny silvery metal plate with a rope pattern. This decorative process is called the Fukurin (覆輪), and one of its purposes is to add beauty to works. In addition, it has practicality, such as preventing the wear of the edge part. Also, it prevents wear and tear on the Kimono if the edge damages it by touching the cloth.
About the design, this Tsuba seems to be depicted as a landscape with rain. This design is called the Shigure Yasuri (時雨鑢), a type of Yasurime (鑢目, thin line) pattern applied to the backs of Tsuba, Kozukas, or Kougais. A skinny diagonal pattern cut intermittently, similar to the image of falling rain in Japanese paintings. The same pattern is engraved on both sides of this Tsuba. This design is such that you can almost hear the sound of falling rain.
Saya： Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
Authentication Paper：NBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1020238)
NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 31th in the 5th year of Reiwa (2023). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
Registration Number : Kyoto 29667
The Board of Education in Kyoto prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(銃刀剣類登録証). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.

To legally export the sword from Japan to other countries, we will have to apply for its permit to the Agency for Cultural Affairs(Bunkacho) and return the original registration paper to the Board of Education. It normally takes around 2-4 weeks to receive this permit after submitting required documents.
