Antique Japanese Sword Katana attributed to Jyumyo with Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade is attributed to a work of the Jyumyo school during early Edo Period (Early-Mid 17th century) according to NBTHK’s appraisal.

The JYUMYO school has its origins from YAMATO(NARA Pref.) and moved to MINO province in KAMAKURA period. The tradition continued for centuries right up until the end of EDO period. Their name “JYUMYO” means life span or longevity. As it’s meaning is so hopeful, their swords were prized as celebrated gift to DAIMYO great families among the SAMURAI society.

The MINO swordsmiths style, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI(Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon )in a classic straight line and random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868).

MINO-DEN especially prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area.

Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of its practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province. The tradition of excellent sword forging skills had been passed to the Edo period, and Jyumyo is a good example.

It is appraised as a Hozon Touken (保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: 日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

*Please keep in mind that there are a couple of visible Kitae Kizu on this blade. If you like to see the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us.

【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length (Nagasa):  70.2 cm (27.6 inches)
Curvature (Sori) 1.5 cm (0.59 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process.
Jimon (Jihada)
Visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process.

Nakago: Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).

Fuchi-Kashira: A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

A plant with small grainy fruits painted with gold is designed on this Fuchi Kashira. This plant motif is probably the Nanten (南天, nandina). People have regarded the Nanten as an auspicious plant since ancient times. Its name Nanten has the same pronunciation as the word Nanten (難転); Nan-ga Tenjiru (難が転じる). It means “change misfortune to good fortune.” Based on this wordplay, it is said many Japanese people grew this plant, believing it would protect them from fire or evil spirits in the Edo period. The former owner of this Katana might have wished some of its good luck would come to him.

Tsuka and Menuki: Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

This Menuki’s motif is the Kiku (菊, chrysanthemum) pattern. The single flower is designed on each side of the handle. We estimate this mark is incorporated as a family crest. Although some colorings have faded due to aging, it seems golden paint was initially painted on the petals.

A long time ago, chrysanthemums were used as a medicine for obtaining a long life in the continent, and this flower was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). The chrysanthemum symbolizes fall, and people have greatly appreciated it since ancient times. As its petals form radially, the chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.

Tsuba and Habaki: Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

The Mimi (耳, edge) of this antique iron Tsuba has finished thicker than the other part. About the design, it depicts autumn scenery. We could see the grassy waterside and the birds flying in the sky. The tips of the leaves, water droplets, and the birds’ beaks are inlaid with brass and silvery paints.

Saya: Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication Paper: NBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 378663)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Jan 28th in the 20th year of Heisei (2008). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.

Registration Number: Niigata 064486

The Board of Education in Niigata prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho (銃刀剣類登録証). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.
