This item is an antique Kayakuire (火薬入れ, powder flask). It is a small container to store gunpowder. In Japan, powder flasks were made from developed materials and produced with advanced techniques. As you see in this item, some of them were gorgeously painted with lacquer. We estimate this powder flask was made in the Edo period or later.
You could find a flower pattern that is painted with golden color. The Kikyou (桔梗, Japanese bellflower) is the motif of this design. Several famous Samurais used this flower pattern for their family crests, such as Akechi Mitsuhide (明智 光秀, 1528-1582), Katou Kiyomasa (加藤 清正, 1562-1611). According to a theory, Japanese people once used the Kikyou flower to tell their fortune by offering it to the Buddha and Gods. Kikkyou-wo Uranau (吉凶を占う) means telling one’s fortune in Japanese. This Kikkyou (吉凶) changed to Kikyou (桔梗), and this flower was named as Kikyou.
