This Tsuba depicts a human figure alongside bamboo. While the exact motif is uncertain, the composition resembles the traditional Chinese theme of the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove.” This group of seven scholars and poets lived during the late Three Kingdoms to early Jin dynasty period (3rd century AD) and were known for their devotion to Daoist philosophy and their free-spirited discussions away from political and social constraints. The design of this Tsuba may have been inspired by that theme, reflecting the Edo-period admiration for Chinese literati culture and its ideals of intellectual and spiritual freedom.
In Japan, bamboo has long been regarded as a symbol of purity, integrity, resilience, and prosperity. Its straight, jointed stalks represent honesty and upright character, while its ability to bend without breaking embodies strength with flexibility. Because new shoots quickly grow even after being cut, bamboo is also associated with rebirth and vitality. Together with pine and plum, bamboo is one of the “Three Friends of Winter” (Shochikubai)—plants that remain strong and beautiful through the cold season—and is often used in New Year decorations such as Kadomatsu to invite good fortune and ward off evil.

Fuchi Kashira is a kind of metal fitting of the Japanese sword, which improves the handle’s strength. Fuchi Kashira is a combination of two parts; Fuchi and Kashira.
