Title: Ebisu Daikokuzu Sukashi
This copper Tsuba has a circle shape. Ebisu and Daikokuten are engraved with Sukashi (openwork) technique. Both are regarded as members of Shichifuku-jin (七福神, the Seven Gods of Good Fortune) in Japan.
Ebisu has a fishing rod in his right hand and holds a sea bream in his left hand. People believe he will bring big catches of marine products and worship him as a god of safety voyage. Ports flourish coming in out of ships; therefore, safety voyage brings prosperity in business. That is the reason why Ebisu is also respected as a god of success in business.
Daikokuten has a Uchide-no-Kozuchi (打ち出の小槌, small mallet, a kind of Japanese treasure) in his right hand and carries a big bag in his left hand. Moreover, he stands on straw rice bags. Generally, he wears Karigunu (狩衣, daily style cloth for court nobles after the Heian period) and puts a hood. He is believed as a god of treasure, happiness, and virtue.
What is Tsuba?
Tsuba is the hand-guard of the Japanese sword. High-class Samurai wore his katana sword with its beautiful sword mountings such as Tsuba. The front design of Tsuba tends to be more decorative as this part was often seen by other Samurais when he was walking on the streets.
Why is it that the sword mounting was important for Samurai?
The sword mountings of the Japanese sword have many kinds of decorations such as handguards (Tsuba), sword hilt (Menuki), pommel (Fuchi Kashira). The Japanese sword not only worked as a weapon but also as an object to show who he was. For example, it shows their personalities and beliefs. You could say that it is like decorations for smartphones today. We recommend you zoom in the pictures of the sword fittings. When you do so, you can see the skill of Japanese metal engraving techniques. They are mainly made of iron and copper with inlays of gold, silver, and bronze. When it comes to handguard (Tsuba), each one has a different outline and weight. These sword fittings that have lived with Japanese swords in the same age might be worth as much as the Japanese swords. They are inconspicuous parts of the Japanese sword. Yet, if you are knowledgeable or particular about it, you will become a connoisseur of the Samurai.
