Description
Wooden Sword Stand with Botan ni Kujaku Motif
This elegant wooden sword stand is designed for displaying a katana or a daishō set (katana and wakizashi). It features a glossy woodgrain-style finish, enhanced by refined gold-colored detailing delicately etched across the surface.
The central decorative theme depicts peonies and peacocks (牡丹に孔雀図, Botan ni Kujaku-zu), a classic combination in Japanese decorative arts that brings together two symbols celebrated for their splendor and auspicious meaning. The peony (牡丹, botan), often regarded as the “king of flowers,” represents happiness, wealth, nobility, and magnificence. Long considered a favorable motif, it symbolizes prosperity and abundant harvests. In Japanese, the second character of the word botan (丹) originally referred to an “elixir of immortality” associated with ancient mountain hermits, which gave the peony additional connotations of longevity and eternal youth.
The peacock (孔雀, kujaku) is believed to have been introduced to Japan during the Asuka period (592/593–710). Known for feeding on poisonous and harmful insects, the peacock came to be associated with strong vitality and the ability to ward off evil. Because of its high fertility, it also symbolizes the prosperity of descendants, and for these reasons it has long been regarded as an auspicious and protective presence.
A closer look at the base reveals butterflies (蝶, cho)engraved on both legs of the stand. The butterfly has been a favored motif in Japan due to its beauty and its symbolic life cycle. As a creature that transforms from larva to chrysalis and finally into a butterfly, it represents rebirth, transformation, and renewal. For samurai in particular, this motif resonated as a symbol of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, and butterflies were sometimes believed to embody the souls of the departed.
The stand is not only a functional display piece but also a decorative object that reflects the refined aesthetics and layered symbolism of traditional Japanese art.
