Description
This wooden sword stand is ideal for displaying a katana or a daisho set (katana and wakizashi).
The Kakedai (sword stand) is a traditional display support used for Japanese swords. Placed on a shelf or in a tokonoma alcove, it holds the sword horizontally so that the blade and mounting can be appreciated safely while also keeping the sword stable when it is not in use.

The surface is finished in deep black lacquer, and the imagery is created using a combination of lacquer techniques and inlay. The shimmering details are consistent with Raden (螺鈿), cut into small pieces and set into the lacquer to catch the light in iridescent colors. In several areas, the slightly sparkling, grain-like texture suggests sprinkled metallic powder effects often used in lacquerwork to add depth and a night-sky glow to the background. Together, these techniques turn the stand into something closer to a small lacquered art panel rather than a plain accessory.
The decoration changes between the two faces, offering two different seasonal landscapes. One side presents a famous-view style scene: a broad landscape with a prominent mountain silhouette that recalls Mount Fuji, alongside architectural elements such as a bridge and small structures, evoking travel, scenic appreciation, and the cultural idea of celebrated places. The other side shifts to a quieter natural scene, with flowing water, low hills, delicate plants, and small butterflies, emphasizing the beauty of the seasons and the peacefulness of nature.
