Description

This wooden sword stand is ideal for displaying a katana or a daisho set (katana and wakizashi). This wooden sword stand is suitable for exhibiting a Katana sword. As seen in the example pictures, you could also display a Daisho (Katana & Wakizashi) set. You could enjoy this item as a sword stand or interior decoration in your room.

One side features motifs of butterflies (cho, 蝶) and gourds (hyotan, 瓢箪), while the other is decorated with the family crest Kikusui-mon (菊水紋).

Butterflies symbolize beauty, transformation, and rebirth. Gourds are long-standing auspicious symbols associated with prosperity, good fortune, protection from illness, and warding off evil. These motifs are often paired together in Japanese art and decorative craftwork. The combination is especially well-known through Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s “Sennari Hyōtan” and “Mubyōtan”, and the image of butterflies gathering around gourds represents abundance and auspicious fortune.

The reverse side shows the Kikusui-mon, a crest depicting chrysanthemum flowers floating on running water. This emblem has been regarded as a symbol of longevity and good fortune, originating from an ancient Chinese legend in which one could prolong life by drinking water that had flowed through a field of chrysanthemums. Because of this association, the design came to be treated as an auspicious motif in Japan as well.

The use of the Kikusui pattern is believed to have begun in the Kamakura period (1185–1333). Its elegant combination of chrysanthemum blossoms and flowing water conveys both refinement and deep symbolic meaning.
