Description

This item is a Kakejiku (掛軸, hanging scroll). When displaying a hanging scroll in a Japanese-style room, it is generally hung on the wall of the Tokonoma (床の間). However, no etiquette says you cannot hang a hanging scroll anywhere other than in Tokonoma or a Japanese-style room. You could enjoy them regardless of where you display them. You could also create an alcove-like space by simply hanging a scroll out of direct sunlight, laying tatami mats under it, and placing Japanese miscellaneous goods and flower arrangements. A Tokonoma is a space in a Japanese-style room where the floor is one step higher than the rest of the room. It was initially thought to be a place where gods resided and was created as a space for people of high status to sit. Since the Edo period, Tokonomas have been created in ordinary houses as a place for guests (high-status people) to sit, and it is considered the most sacred and noble place in a Japanese-style room. In recent years, it has often been set up as a space for art exhibitions, such as hanging scrolls and displaying flowers and ornaments.

This Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) features a bijin-ga (美人画), a traditional Japanese painting style that depicts elegant and graceful women. Bijin-ga, which means “beautiful person picture,” became popular during the Edo period (1600-1868) and continued to influence Japanese art into the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho periods (1912-1926).

The woman in the painting is wearing a refined white kimono adorned with intricate patterns, including motifs of nature such as pine trees and landscapes. These designs symbolize longevity and prosperity in Japanese culture. Her posture and delicate hand movements, holding what appears to be a folding fan or an accessory, emphasize her elegance and refined manners. Her hairstyle, which follows traditional Japanese styling, further enhances her sophisticated appearance.

The scroll itself is decorated with a gold-patterned fabric that frames the painting, adding a sense of formality and luxury. The detailed brocade around the artwork highlights the delicate nature of the painting, drawing attention to the soft, flowing lines and subtle color gradations that are characteristic of nihonga (Japanese-style painting).

This type of artwork reflects the aesthetic ideals of classical Japanese beauty, focusing on grace, modesty, and refinement. It shares similarities with works by renowned Japanese artists such as     Uemura Shoen (上村松園), who was known for her elegant portrayals of women. The soft facial expression, gentle pose, and intricate kimono patterns suggest an influence from yamato-e, a classical Japanese painting style known for its delicate and decorative approach.

Overall, this kakejiku embodies the Japanese appreciation for refined beauty and traditional craftsmanship, making it not just a piece of art but also a representation of cultural values and artistic heritage.
