Description
This is an antique sword stand originally used to display a Japanese samurai sword, such as a tachi (太刀). Traditionally placed in a formal room or near a tokonoma (alcove), such stands were crafted not only for function but also to reflect the owner’s taste and status.
The stand features a striking design: brilliant gold-colored karakusa (arabesque vine) motifs densely painted over a glossy black lacquer base. In Japanese art, karakusa symbolizes prosperity, longevity, and unbroken continuity, as the vine patterns extend endlessly. This motif has been widely used in traditional crafts, textiles, and architecture for centuries. The deep black base is coated with urushi lacquer, a natural resin obtained from the lacquer tree. Highly prized for its durability and rich luster, urushi has been a cornerstone of Japanese decorative arts for over a thousand years.
With its bold contrast of gold and black, this piece is not only a functional sword display but also a refined example of Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. It can be enjoyed today as an elegant interior accent, adding a touch of timeless craftsmanship and cultural depth to any space.
