Description
This antique wooden sword stand is suitable for exhibiting a Japanese sword, especially a Tachi sword, as seen in the example photos. We hope you will enjoy this item as a sword stand and also as an interior decoration in your room.

The sword stand features a depiction of daily life in ancient China. Based on the clothing of the figures portrayed, it is believed to be from the Han Dynasty. One of the traditional garments of China is the Hanfu (漢服, traditional Chinese clothing), a traditional ethnic dress. Just as with women’s Hanfu, there were various types of Hanfu for men, and there were specific rules about which Hanfu to wear and what decorations to use based on one’s social status.

For example, Hanfu worn by nobility featured luxurious patterns and long hems, while Hanfu worn by commoners had shorter hems. Similarly, in Japan, clothing colors and styles were also used to distinguish social ranks, showing that both China and Japan used clothing details such as color, patterns, and hem length to separate the social classes.

Additionally, the sides of the bottom surface of the stand are decorated with an auspicious Kissho (吉祥) pattern of interlaced latticework. Since ancient times, people have sought good fortune by adorning their clothing and belongings with lucky motifs. Familiar patterns in Japan, such as the crane (鶴文, tsuru mon) and treasure patterns (宝尽し文, takara zukushi mon), originated in China as traditional symbols of good luck.

This piece also features a Raimon (雷文) pattern on the sides, a geometric swirl design formed by connecting straight lines. The raimon is often seen in the interior of ramen bowls and is a motif symbolizing the power and awe of thunder in Chinese culture. It is believed to have protective powers, serving as a talisman against evil. This design is commonly found in traditional crafts and architectural decorations worldwide. In Japan, raimon patterns can also be seen on Yayoi pottery and are still used as a traditional motif today. The entire sword stand is finished in red lacquer, a color that symbolizes good fortune in Chinese culture. This piece, with its rich symbolism of luck and prosperity, is a truly auspicious item.
