Antique Japanese Sword Katana attributed to Ko Naminohira with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade is attributed to Ko Naminohira (古波平). Naminohira (波平) was one of the most influential schools in the Satsuma domain, founded by a YAMATO-DEN swordsmith, Masakuni (正國), during the late-Heian period (Late 12th century). They were known for having their smith name with one of these letters, 行 (Yuki) or 安 (Yasu). The Naminohira swords were cherished among Samurais in the marine army, mainly because the name Naminohira (波平) means “Tides are quiet” in Japanese. Blades forged by members of the Naminohira school have strong characteristics of YAMATO-DEN (大和伝), one of the five Japanese sword-forging traditions.

The origin of the name Naminohira dates back to the school’s foundation. It is said that the founder, Masakuni, was able to calm the waves by dedicating his sword to the sea when his school from Yamato sailed to live in the Satsuma domain. Since then, he began to use the title “Naminohira Yukiyasu (波平行安)” – “Tides are quiet, ’tis an easy way.” From the late Heian period until the end of Samurai times (Late 19th century), the Naminohira school maintained mastership for a thousand years. Ko Naminohira refers to works from the late Kamakura to the early Nanbokucho period (Early 14th century) of the Naminohira school. The swords forged in the YAMATO-DEN tradition are famous for their beautiful Jigane, steel surface, and straight tempering line (Suguha).

It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token (特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

*Please keep in mind that there are Kitae Kizu and black rust spots on this blade. If you like to see the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us.

【Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)66.0 cm (26.0 inches)
Curvature(Sori)0.60 cm (0.23 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

KissakiKissaki is the tip of the Japanese sword.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

KoshiraeKoshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

The surface of this Fuchi Kashira has worn due to aging. Now, it is challenging to judge the motif of its design. We estimate the motif is probably clouds, dragons, or something else. It seems golden paint was initially applied to this work.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

*Please keep in mind that the Tsuka Maki is quite worn. If you don’t mind paying additional cost and waiting, we will have it rewrapped with new silk thread. For more detail, please feel free to contact us.

The Ebi (海老, shrimp) is the motif of each Menuki. While its coloring of the surfaces has been partially faded due to aging, it seems this Menuki is made from copper. Judging from the shapes of these shrimps visible through gaps of the Tsukamaki thread, we believe this Menuki’s motif is an Iseebi (伊勢海老, spiny lobster). According to a theory, Japanese people already ate shrimp in the Heian period (794-1185). However, it was an expensive ingredient for ordinary citizens, so only the nobility and high-class people could enjoy it. People started using shrimp as a good-omen pattern and appreciated designing it for their family crests in the Muromachi period (1336-1573).

In Samurai society, as a shrimp is covered with a hard shell, it is thought that a shrimp represents the figure of a brave Samurai who wears armor. It has the meaning that wishes the fate of a Samurai will last for a long time. Shrimps have been likened to older adults because of their long feelers. Also, shrimps actively jump even though they are bowed. That is the reason why the shrimp pattern is treated as a symbol of perpetual youth and longevity. This animal shed its molt several times to grow up; therefore, some people have considered it is a symbol of success in life.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

It depicts a man with a long beard holding a sword in one hand and an Oni (鬼) facing him. It seems this Tsuba depicts a scene that a man is chasing this Oni. The Oni is a Japanese monster with a human body, horns, and fangs. They are usually harmful to people. However, they are sometimes helpful existence. This Tsuba might have inspired some stories or folk tales.

If you focus on the center part of this Tsuba, you will see an engraved inscription. It is written as follows: Yamato-Ju Ietsugu Saku (大和住, 家次次作). It means Ietsugu is the maker of this Tsuba, and he lived in the Yamato area. Please note that there is no proof of this inscription.

SayaSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1021630)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Dec 15th in the 5th year of Reiwa (2023). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
