Title: Antique Japanese Taiko (Drum) with Tokugawa Family Emblem

Description
This antique Taiko, a traditional Japanese drum, has a family crest of the Tokugawa family, who was a shogunate family during the Edo period(1603-1868 A.D.) This family crest is called Aoi-Mon (葵紋) and is composed of a plant: Futaba-Aoi (フタバアオイ, Asarum caulescens). This design initially comes from the mark of the Kamo shrine in Kyoto prefecture. After unifying Japan, Ieyasu Tokugawa forbade other families using the Aoi crest to give authority to this motif. Only a few families were allowed to use the Aoi crest, with the exception of the Tokugawa family.

The first Shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa, opened the government in Edo city (Today’s Tokyo) in 1603 A.D. after winning a battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Tokugawa family gained the most political power in the Edo period and prospered. We believe this Taiko was once owned by one of the Tokugawa family members.
