Several plants and flowers are engraved, such as cherry blossom, bamboo, pine tree, etc. Hanabishi-Mon also can be seen on the surface. Cherry blossom is one of the seasonal things of spring, and it’s been loved since a long time. It’s believed the god of grain exists in cherry blossom therefore, this flower pattern has been treated as the symbol of a plentiful harvest. People appreciate bamboo pattern since a long time. Bamboo and pine tree are the motifs of Shouchikubai (three good luck motifs; pine tree, bamboo, and Japanese apricot). As pine trees keep their green color by withstanding severe heat and cold, it has been considered a symbol of good luck. Also, some people believe mountain hermit lives at pine trees and eat its nuts. Based on this belief, it’s said pine tree represents longevity. Hanabshi-Mon is the combination of four lozenges in this case. This pattern has been used since Heian period.

【Scabbard】
The scabbard is painted with glossy red lacquer.
