\n\u00a0Fuchi Kashira was made of copper. Houses and giant pine trees are engraved. Please look at Kashira. If you focus on the house’s back, you can see two triangular constructions that look like a tent. It might be\u00a0Komomaki<\/em>\u00a0for pine trees.\u00a0Komomaki<\/em>\u00a0is the method of wrapping with straw for exterminating harmful insects. This way has been used since the Edo period, and it is one of the charms of winter in some areas in Japan, especially in parks, but it is not a measure against the cold. As it is found in the cold season, this Fuchi Kashira might describe a scene of winter lives. Small circle patterns that are inlaid with gold can be regarded as snow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0As pine trees keep its green color throughout the years by withstanding severe heat and cold, it is treated like a good luck symbol. Also, some people believe mountain hermit lives at pine trees and eat its nuts. Based on this belief, it is said that the pine tree represents longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n

(F-15)<\/span>
\n\u00a0Fuchi Kashira was made of copper. Its base is decorated with Nanakoji-Tagane (chisel for metalworking). Nanakoji-Tagane hit the groundwork, so small dents cover the background. Each little dot looks like a fish egg. When “Nanakoji” is written in Japanese, the characters which mean children of fish are used. That is why this decorative technique was named Nanakoji.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Several turtles are engraved and inlaid with gold. There is a proverb in Japan, which means cranes live for 1,000 years; turtles live for 10,000 years. It might sound exaggerated, but it is used as an idiomatic expression to explain good health and long life. As the proverb says, turtle lives a long life; therefore, turtle and turtle’s shell pattern represent longevity. Also, according to a theory, it is the symbol of a happy marriage. The turtle is one of the most famous traditional motifs among Japanese people.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0Fuchi Kashira was made of copper. There are some small birds that are inlaid with gold. And you can find a kind of basket on the ground. This Fuchi Kashira might describe a scene at the waterside.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Fuchi Kashira?<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0Fuchi Kashira is a kind of metal fitting of the Japanese sword, which improves the handle’s strength. Fuchi Kashira is a combination of two parts; Fuchi and Kashira. Fuchi was put next to Tsuba (hand-guard), and Kashira was put on the grip bottle. Fuchi Kashira had developed not only its practicality but also beauty for the decoration of the Japanese sword.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0The sword mountings of the Japanese sword have many kinds of decorations such as handguards (Tsuba), sword hilt (Menuki), pommel (Fuchi Kashira).
