\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Moritsugu (\u76db\u6b21), a swordsmith of the Kong\u014d Hy\u014de (\u91d1\u525b\u5175\u885b) school, active in Chikuzen Province (present-day Fukuoka Prefecture) during the late Muromachi period (early to mid-16th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Kong\u014d Hy\u014de school is a prestigious lineage said to have been founded by Kong\u014d Hy\u014de Morikuni in the late Kamakura period (around the late 13th century). It maintained close ties with the Sairen school, one of the most prominent swordsmith groups in the region. Many accomplished swordsmiths emerged from this lineage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The smiths of the Kong\u014d Hy\u014de school resided in the Urayama area, near Kamado Shrine\u2014also known as Kong\u014d H\u014dman\u2014reflecting the school\u2019s strong association with Buddhism. In fact, the group is believed to have forged swords for H\u014dmanzan(\u5b9d\u6e80\u5c71) a powerful religious and military Buddhist center of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0A characteristic feature of this school is the use of the character \u201c\u76db\u201d (<\/span>Mori<\/span><\/i>) in the smiths\u2019 names, as seen in Moritsugu.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0In general, the term \u201cKong\u014d Hy\u014de\u201d refers to works produced during the late Muromachi period, while \u201cKo-Kong\u014d Hy\u014de\u201d (Old Kong\u014d Hy\u014de) denotes earlier works from the late Kamakura to Nanbokuch\u014d periods.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a Hozon Token <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>\uff1a<\/span>Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The birds depicted on this Fuchi Kashira seems to be a heron (\u9dfa, Sagi).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The heron, a beautiful water bird, was considered a symbol of noble character and high-ranking bureaucrats because of its appearance of standing unstained in the muddy water of rivers and rice fields. Also, the heron is often depicted in classical Chinese paintings as well since it is an auspicious bird. For example, A painting depicting a heron, a lotus, and a drunken hibiscus represents that one\u2019s future life will be filled with happiness, wealth, and prosperity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The theme of this fuchi-kashira is akikusa (\u79cb\u8349, autumn grasses), a traditional motif in Japanese art associated with the beauty of the autumn season and the changing of nature. The surrounding floral designs appear to include kiku (\u83ca, chrysanthemum) and kiky\u014d (\u6854\u6897, bellflower), identifiable by their distinctive petal shapes. This suggests that the overall composition represents akikusa, a motif that captures the refined aesthetic of autumn in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In addition, a bird is depicted among the autumn grasses, which is likely a quail (\u9d89, uzura). The combination of autumn grasses and quail is a classic motif in waka and haiku poetry, evoking the quiet, melancholic atmosphere of the autumn season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The motif of this Tsuba appears to be Wild goose (\u96c1, Kari). The wild goose is a migratory bird that represents fall. Its pattern is also called \u201cKarigane (\u96c1\u91d1),\u201d and some families used this motif for their family crests. The design that describes diagonally flying wild geese is named \u201cGankou Mon (\u96c1\u884c\u6587).\u201d This bird is engraved by not only a realistic figure but also a very simplified shape: Hiragana (\u3072\u3089\u304c\u306a, a kind of Japanese letter) \u201che (\u3078)\u201d shape that sometimes makes also wild goose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 3038188)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on December 1st in the 7th year of Reiwa (2025). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>Fukuoka 65774<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Fukuoka issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
