\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Kaifu (\u6d77\u90e8) during the Muromachi period (late 15th-mid 16th century). Kaifu is the name of the clan and school that ruled Awa province (Today’s Tokushima prefecture). From the beginning of the Kamakura period (late 12th century), they started sword-forging by taking advantage of its geographical location where iron sand was abundant near the Kaifu River. Their sword-forging was active and reached its heyday during the Sengoku Jidai (Warring state period in the late 15th-early 16th century). Kaifu clan was destroyed by Chosokabe Motochika in 1575. After the event, the school’s presence was hindered in the region. However, when the Hachisuka clan took control of Awa province, the clan invited the members of the Kaifu school and let them live near the Tokushima castle, forging blades for the clan. The school continued at the end of the Edo period.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historical Background<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0The late Muromachi period overlaps with the Sengoku period (\u6226\u56fd\u6642\u4ee3, \u201cWarring States Period\u201d), a time marked by ongoing military conflict and political fragmentation across Japan. In this turbulent era, the samurai class played a central role as both warriors and political actors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Swords were vital to the samurai not just as weapons but also as symbols of personal honor and status. A well-forged sword was regarded as an extension of the samurai\u2019s soul, used in both battle and ceremonial practices.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0As warfare intensified, demand for high-quality blades grew rapidly. Feudal lords (\u5927\u540d, daimy\u014d) sought to equip their armies with superior weapons, turning to renowned swordsmiths like Moritaka for craftsmanship that combined functionality with aesthetic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a\u00a0Hozon Token\u00a0<\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: \u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>\uff1a<\/span>Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This fuchi-kashira shares the same plum blossom motif as the tsuba, creating a cohesive design.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The theme of the Menuki is the dragon (\u9f8d, Ryu).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (\u86df, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Also, in Japan, there is a belief that worships dragon as a water god and is called Ryujin Shinkou (\u7adc\u795e\u4fe1\u4ef0). Since rice cultivation flourished in this country, water is always an essential resource. Therefore, the dragon motif has been familiar to Japanese people since a long time ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This iron tsuba features a\u00a0Japanese apricot blossoms (Ume, \u6885). Ume begin to bloom in winter that snow still covers its tree so that people thought this flower tells the arrival of spring. Same as cherry blossom, it has been appreciated for a long time in Japan. People enjoy its adorable petal shape and scent, gracefully branched tree, and compose many poems. As it comes out in the cold season, it symbolizes the power of perseverance and vitality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NBTHK<\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on December 1st in the 7th year of Reiwa (2025). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/a>\u00a0for your record if you request.<\/p>\n

Registration Number : Hyogo 104877<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Hyogo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
