Antique Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Motoyuki with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Motoyuki. The name Motoyuki lasted for 4 generations and the one who forged was active during H\u014dreki era (the mid-Edo period: 1751-1764) in Hizen Province (today’s saga Prefecture).<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The first gen Motoyuki<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0He first signed as Yukihira(\u884c\u5e73). He believed that he was a descendant of Kishin Dayu Yukihira(\u7d00\u65b0\u5927\u592b\u884c\u5e73), a famous swordsmith in Bungo province during the late Heian-early Kamakura period(Late12th-early 13th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0He was born in the 19th year of Kan-Ei era(1642). At the beginning of his career, he stayed in Takada village, Oita prefecture. And he moved to Karatsu city in Saga prefecture when he was 35 years old(the 5th year of Enpo era: 1676). At around the same time, he received the honorable title of Kawachi Daijyo(\u6cb3\u5185\u5927\u63be).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In the seventh year of Genroku era(1694), he moved to Edo city and received a new maker\u2019s name Motoyuki(\u672c\u884c) from Hon Ami school and then officially changed his maker\u2019s name to Motoyuki(\u672c\u884c). Hon-Ami school has been trusted official Japanese sword polishers\/appraisers since 1596(Late Azuchi Momoyama period). This fact indicates prestigious Hon-Ami school acknowledged his ability to forge high-quality swords.<\/span>
\nDuring the same time, he often visited Kamakura city to master SOSHU style swords from the master named Tsunahiro. SOSHU style, also known as SOSHU DEN, is one of the most traditional Japanese sword-forging methods developed in SOSHU area(Today\u2019s Kanagawa prefecture).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Motoyuki moved back to Karatsu city after mastering Soshu style technique. There is a record of him forging a sword when he was 83 years old. It is said that he called himself Bungo Taro. Bungo is the area Karatsu city is located. He was also called Hige Kawachi, which came from the fact that he had a nice bear. In addition, at the end of his career, he was also known as Matsuba Motoyuki. How he signed the letter \u672c(Moto) was distinctive during this time, and it resembled Matsu(Japanese pine needles).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The smith\u2019s name Motoyuki lasted 4th generations, and the first-gen Motoyuki forged this blade. The blades forged by the first-gen Motyuki are pretty popular among Japanese sword collectors in Japan. His passion for improving his artistry is beyond our imaginations. By moving places and learning from different masters, he reached the pinnacle of craftsmanship. Based on how he signed his blade, we believe it was forged in his late career when he mastered this high level of techinique.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>: <\/span>Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong>: <\/span>Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade (No. 13492)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on December 21th in the 7th year of Reiwa (2026). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: Kanagawa 61789<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Kanagawa prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Touken Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
